Protest in Pakistan over the rape of 5-year-old girl

A 5-year-old girl and her 3-year-old cousin were kidnapped on September 12 from outside her house where she was playing  at Ghausia Colony in Mughalpura.

The girl was brutally raped before being dumped in a destitute Lahore neighbourhood   at about 8pm (2100 Singapore time) on September 13, a day after the kidnap.

The perpetrators dumped the girl in front of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore, where she battled for life. The boy was found weeping outside the hospital where he had been let off. Doctors said the child was raped several times.

On September 14 and September 15 rights campaigners and workers from NGOs staged protest rallies across Pakistan and demanded the arrest of the culprits, witnesses said. Widespread outrage dominated social media while Pakistan private TV channels prominently broadcast reports on the girl and her ordeal.

The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) have arrested at least 50 suspects with the help of police of other districts. Jamil Khan, a police official was suspended and subsequently arrested for releasing four suspects after taking bribe from them.

On the 15th however,  police confirmed they have finally arrested the man who dumped the child. He has been identified as on of the rapists. He was seen after observing the hospital CCTV footage and are hopeful of more arrests in the coming days.

"Her condition is relatively stable but still she is in the Intensive Care Unit," doctor Farzand Ali, medical superintendant in the Services hospital told AFP.
