Mother Puts Crying Baby In Ice Chest


Jami Jo Ranson, 38-year-old, was arrested on September 2 at a residence located in the 12000 block of Tams Drive after putting her baby in an ice chest, closed the lid and sat back while the baby panicked and cried.

The Ponchatoula, La., woman according to Police reports was seen by a witness when she put her baby in the ice chest which also had a gas can in it. She sat and did nothing while her baby cried continuously. The witness who was afraid for the child's life intervened and got the baby out, then called Baton Rouge Police.

The baby was not hurt and has been placed in the custody of child protective services. The baby was taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure.

Ranson was arrested on probable cause and booked for child desertion. She was found in possession of controlled prescription drugs (a silver container with 6 Lorazapam pills, which is a Schedule IIV narcotic) while in Police custody, this warranted additional charges. She was charged with Child Desertion, Possession of Schedule IIV Controlled Dangerous Substance, and Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution.  Ranson is being held in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on $10,000 bond.
